Each of the ‘phases’ of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have clocked in at differing lengths. The first two phases are six films each, the third at eleven films, whilst the fourth and fifth are charting for six films each along with seven or eight TV series.
The late January announced slate of rival DC Studios seemed to follow suit with its “Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters,” essentially this universe’s ‘Phase One’, consisting of five films and five TV shows that are directly a part of the DCU.
At the time of the announcement, DC Studios co-chief James Gunn indicated there will be more and this is just what they were revealing for the moment. Today, though he hinted at just how big the plans are – and they seem to go beyond just what’s announced.
Responding to a fan’s question on Twitter about how much of the DCU ‘Chapter 1’ slate has already been unveiled, Gunn confirmed that “less than half” of the slate’s movie & television series have been made public.
That would suggest at least twenty projects will constitute this ‘Chapter 1’ of the DCU – and that doesn’t include the various already announced or in production ‘Elseworlds’ projects like the sequels to “Joker,” “Constantine” and “The Batman”.
As previously explained, the DCU will involve a “world where superheroes exist” and have been around for some time with a “big, huge central story” tied to it. That will be spread across two ‘Chapters’ which will be told over the span of ten years.
Gunn has already indicated plans are to release approximately two new shows and two new movies every year after 2025 with “Superman: Legacy” in July 2025 and the animated series “Creature Commandos” the first works released.
