Eight years ago MGM attempted to revive the “Poltergeist” franchise with the Gil Kenan-directed 2015 film that came and went without much impact.
Multiple attempts have been made to recapture the magic of Tobe Hooper and Steven Spielberg’s 1982 original without much success, the second film arguably the only one of everything that came after to prove at least interesting despite its flaws.
Now though, it appears there may be life in the old ghost yet. With Amazon having acquired MGM, and it looks like the streamer is reportedly interested in resurrecting the franchise.
Speaking on The Hot Mic, entertainment journalist Jeff Sneider says the franchise has been named as one of several MGM properties that Amazon is looking to “prioritize” for new adaptations and monetization.
He adds that the situation would be “complicated by the fact that Spielberg would likely need to be involved”. He goes on to say: “All this stuff is so up in the air. [Amazon is] still figuring out, ‘What do we have here in MGM, what do we want to do with it, and how do we want to do it?'”
The original made $121.7 million back in the day on a $10 million budget. The 2015 remake, despite the bad reception, still managed to pull in $95 million from a $35 million budget.
