Following the release of Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” a report came out the following week talking with VFX technicians on the film who agreed with widespread audience criticism of the film’s visual effects quality.
The piece in Vulture talked about how shortcuts were taken and critical resources were diverted away to focus on “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”.
That combined with reports from within the VFX industry itself in recent years regarding working conditions and treatment. So there’s been an understandable large amount of talk about the movie’s visuals along with some of its more ambitious and wild choices such as with M.O.D.O.K. character.
Now the film’s visual effects supervisors Jesse James Chisholm and Dave Hodgins have gone on the record about the chat. Chisholm, who has worked on “Captain Marvel” and “Black Panther,” spoke with Variety and says:
“I feel like working for Marvel, I’m in the NFL. They asked me to do ‘Ant-Man’ and I was like great, these films have all this heart, but I read the script and thought, ‘Holy s–t! This is not ‘Ant-Man,’ this is gigantic.
I got to play in the Super Bowl. I got to create characters and environments and bring Peyton [Reed]’s movie to life, and it’s really exciting. I feel fortunate to do what I do, and I work my ass off.
It’s easy in this climate right now to bash things and that’s the easy way. I don’t know if many people know what we have to do and what it takes to make a movie of this magnitude, but I’m proud of what we accomplished.”
The results sadly have spoken for themselves with the better than expected opening weekend of “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” leading to a record-breaking second weekend plummet and a current third weekend that isn’t tracking much better. Reviews for the film are similarly not good.
