“Shazam” Sequel Tracking For Soft Start

Warner Bros. Pictures

DC’s “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” sequel has hit early tracking projections and those early numbers suggest the film could fall a little short of its predecessor.

According to Box Office Pro, forecasted projections for the film see it currently tracking to earn between $43-52 million for its opening three-day weekend.

To put that in perspective, the original film had a debut of $53.5 million in 2019 which, at the time, was the DCEU’s lowest opening. The pandemic subsequently changed all that with “Wonder Woman 1984” in late 2020 and “The Suicide Squad” in mid-2021 fairing much worse.

Thanks to good reviews and worth of mouth though, “Shazam” ended up earning a solid $363.6 million worldwide which led to a sequel being greenlit.

The film faces the difficulty of being rendered immaterial by the recently announced plans for the new DCU. In addition, it doesn’t have the drawing power of either “The Flash” or the “Aquaman” sequel which are both expected to have major openings.

These are early projections though and will likely go up as we get closer to release. Press and the short-term promotional push for the film are about to begin.

The film’s villain Helen Mirren recently spoke with Access Hollywood and revealed she injured herself in one scene with a punch she threw going straight into a concrete wall. Even now, many months after filming, she says her finger is still ‘all bent’.

“Shazam! Fury of the Gods” clocks in at 130 minutes and opens in cinemas everywhere on March 17th.
