Cinephiles had hoped and then came to accept that Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” wasn’t to be ready for this year’s awards race.
Budgeted at an eye-watering $200 million for an adult drama, the project was shot from April – October 2021, so it seemed like there was a good chance the film might make it for a very late 2022 release.
That wasn’t the case with Apple Studios and Paramount Pictures still reportedly planning to release the film theatrically sometime this year following a festival premiere. So what’s taking so long? Turns out Marty’s still tinkering.
World of Reel reports that Scorsese and his regular editor Thelma Schoonmaker are still at work editing the film, one of the longer post-production processes for the pair to date.
The site indicates ‘Killers’ was all set to have a teaser trailer released in August, with a late Fall release planned. Then Scorsese’s suddenly ordered reshoots in mid-2022 in New York City and Oklahoma, most of which had to do with the film’s coda.
The report follows on from comments earlier this year by actress Lily Gladstone who says Scorsese essentially re-conceived the whole film once he got Oklahoma’s Osage Community involved to have their say about how it was being made and what was being portrayed.
“Killers of the Flower Moon” will initially be released theatrically via Paramount Pictures before becoming an Apple TV+ exclusive when it comes to streaming.
