Sneak Peek: “Astro Boy”-Inspired “Pluto” Series

Netflix

Netflix has released a first look trailer for “Pluto,” a new anime series based on the acclaimed Naoki Urasawa and Takashi Nagasaki created manga of the same name and produced by Genco with animation by M2Studio.

The original work is based on “The Greatest Robot on Earth,” a story within the manga and anime of Osamu Tezuka’s iconic franchise “Astro Boy”.

That 1964 story saw a Sultan build a giant robot with two massive horns named Pluto who sets out to challenge in combat the seven most powerful robots around the world in order prove he is the greatest on Earth – Astro Boy being one of the targets.

“Pluto,” which ran from 2003-2009, reinvents the story as a murder mystery and follows a Europol robot detective named Gesicht in a neo-futuristic world. Gesicht’s current case involves a string of robot and human deaths around the world where the victims have objects positioned by their heads imitating horns.

Evidence soon suggests a robot is responsible for the murders, which would mark the first time a robot has killed a human in eight years, and the seven most scientifically advanced robots in the world are on the killer’s hit list.

In addition, it seems the murdered humans are connected to preserving laws that grant robots equal rights. The Japanese voice cast for the upcoming includes Shinshu Fuji as Gesicht, Yoko Hikasa as Atom and Minori Suzuki as Uran.

“Pluto” will arrive on the streamer later this year.
