Since basically its inception, the highly acclaimed comedy “Ted Lasso” was reportedly conceived as a three-season series.
With the third season going into production last year, all indications have been the new season would be the last – though the cast has been playing coy in interviews, not confirming either way.
Now though, it appears the show’s star, executive producer and co-creator Jason Sudeikis and fellow co-creator Bill Lawrence have built in a way for the show to continue past the upcoming run.
Channing Dungey, the Chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. Television Group which produces the series for the Apple TV+ service, recently spoke with Deadline about the company’s comedy plans in the future, and about “Ted Lasso” specifically. She says:
“What had initially been the vision that Jason and Bill [Lawrence] had, when they went into season one, was very much a three-act structure. Then I think it becomes one of those things that as you get going with it, and if you fall in love with that world and those characters, it’s hard to say goodbye.
The end of the season, it ends beautifully. If that is all we do in the Ted Lasso universe, I think the fans will be really happy and excited. But there’s also a way to crack open a door. If we’re fortunate enough to do more, we can keep on going.”
Whether the rest of the cast will return is clear as contract negotiations with Warners over production delays reportedly caused issues for many of the show’s stars who lost out on other opportunities.
One thing that Dungey says is clear though, there are no plans for any spin-offs and says she doesn’t want spinoffs to be made unless it’s justified: “I do think that when you’re doing a spinoff for a spinoff’s sake, that’s usually where you fall into some problems.”
Seasons 1 and 2 of Ted Lasso are available to stream now on Apple TV+. Season 3 will premiere this spring.
