“Constantine” Sequel Still Moving Forward

Warner Bros. Pictures

One notable absentee from last week’s unveiling of the future of DC Studios was the sequel to 2005’s “Constantine” with Keanu Reeves and director Francis Lawrence returning.

Reeves was spearheading a push to get a follow-up made and Warner Bros. Pictures finally relented late last year and is moving forward on a follow-up.

Of course, that was all before James Gunn and Peter Safran came onboard at DC Studios and completely reshuffled the DC slate. This has naturally led to the question of whether the film is still happening.

A spokesperson for Warner Bros. Discovery has confirmed to EW that the sequel has not been scrapped, despite chatter on social media in the past few days suggesting it had been.

Whilst Gunn & Safran haven’t mentioned it, it’s likely the film will be one of the ‘Elseworlds’ titles (ala “The Batman” and “Joker” sequels) that isn’t a part of the new DC continuity. Reeves will reprise his role of chain-smoking supernatural exorcist and demonologist John Constantine from the “Hellblazer” comics.

The original film grossed $230 million from a $70-90 million production budget and, despite bearing little resemblance to the source material, the film has managed to garner a passionate fanbase that has long wanted a sequel. Tilda Swinton, Peter Stormare, Shia LaBeouf, Djimon Hounsou and Gavin Rossdale also starred in the original.

Akiva Goldsman is returning to write the screenplay and produce alongside J. J. Abrams & Hannah Minghella. No production date has yet been set.
