Segel Has Penned A Live-Action “Space Ghost”

Cartoon Network

Out doing promotion for his new Apple TV+ series “Shrinking” where he stars opposite Harrison Ford, actor Jason Segel has revealed that he’s developing a new live-action adaptation of the cartoon character “Space Ghost”.

In a recent guest appearance on the 20 Questions on Deadline podcast, Segel says he’s currently working on this new version of the 1960s CBS superhero created by Hanna-Barbera Productions who was later reinvented into an absurdist fictional late-night talk show host in the 1990s series “Space Ghost Coast-to-Coast”.

That reinvention paved the way for adult animated comedy success stories like Adult Swim’s “Harvey Birdman: Attorney-at-Law” and “The Venture Brothers”. In the 2000s, the property was revamped again as a serious superhero in a DC Comics mini-series.

Segel wasn’t forthcoming about which incarnation of the character he has translated – be it the original or the satirical reinvention. While his plans aren’t imminent, it is a project he is passionate about:

“There’s a character called Space Ghost who I really loved as a kid. He was like a 1960s superhero. He then was resurrected on Comedy Central as an ironic talk show host. So I wrote a live-action version of that that I would love to make.”

Segel is coming of HBO’s “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty” series, which has been renewed for a second season, along with indie films like “The Sky Is Everywhere” and “Windfall” which were released last year.
