Former “Late Late Show” host Craig Ferguson is coming back with Sony Pictures Television planning to launch a new half-hour syndicated late-night talk show led by Ferguson in the Fall.
“Channel Surf with Craig Ferguson” aims to review “the shocking, surprising and hilarious moments of the week’s shows” and will see him joined by friends and guest stars.
A pilot was shot in the U.K. this month, with the show going out to potential buyers this week in Los Angeles. Ferguson and Tom McLennan will executive produce while Richard Easter and Joe Bolter will serve as writers on the show.
Running after Letterman from 2005-2014, Ferguson’s incarnation of “The Late Late Show” became the most “fun” of the U.S. late-night talk shows – especially in its later years as Ferguson, alongside comedian and voice actor Josh Robert Thompson often ditched traditional formula for looser, semi-improvisational comedy.
The show became known for its relaxed yet unpredictable feel, cheeky sense of humor and some memorable monologues and audience interaction which Ferguson delivered over the years.
Returning with something that sounds more akin to a variation on E!’s “The Soup,” Ferguson says in a statement: “I wanted to do ‘Channel Surf’ because I think television is ready for the return of the silly/ funny/ occasional lip-synching puppet format. Also, it’s a TV show which contains clips of questionable moments from other TV shows, thus creating a spectacular visual turducken of stupid.”
Ferguson is plotting his return as many others are exiting – Trevor Noah and Samantha Bee are out, whilst James Corden is expected to leave his tenure this year.
