Donald Glover is attached to lead and produce a “Spider-Man” spin-off film set within Sony Pictures’ universe of Marvel Comics characters (SPUMC).
Myles Murphy, son of actor and comedian Eddie Murphy, is set to write the project, which currently has no title and revolves around the obscure Spider-Man villain Hypno-Hustler.
Created by Rocket Racoon creator Bill Mantlo in 1978, Hypno-Hustler is Antoine Delsoin – the leader of a band called the Mercy Killers who uses hypnosis technology in his instruments on his audience in order to rob them.
The character routinely shows up on worst supervillains lists, with Glover said to have sparked to the musical aspect of the character and lack of prior screen incarnations.
It also allows for all sorts of variations in the premise, be it a modern hip-hop version, a period piece with a disco theme, or a future-set cyberpunk tale.
Glover appeared in a very brief role in a deleted scene from “Spider-Man: Homecoming” which hinted that he was Miles Morales’ uncle. He also voiced Miles Morales in the Disney XD “Ultimate Spider-Man” series.
Sony is continuing its film slate of Spider-Man characters that began with “Venom” and “Morbius” and will continue with ‘Kraven the Hunter” and “Madame Web” films due out next year.
