Cavill-Free New “Superman” Film Confirmed

Warner Bros. Pictures

After so much speculation this past week or so, finally something concrete has come out of all the talk surrounding the future of DC.

Just minutes ago, DC Studios James Gunn confirmed on Twitter that he and co-CEO Peter Safran’s new DC slate is “ready to go” and promises to “share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year”.

Today though he’s happy to break the news that on the slate is a new Superman movie which Gunn will write. It will also be one without actor Henry Cavill onboard. Gunn says there’s a reason for this, and he hasn’t shut the door entirely on Cavill’s return in some form to the new DCU either:

“In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill. But we just had a great meeting with Henry, and we’re big fans, and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.”

The tweets do hint that Cavill could be returning in another capacity, and Cavill himself has also just done a social media posting confirming that indicates he will no longer playing Superman at all and calls it a ‘changing of the guard’. His full post can be read here.

The new Superman film is expected to focus on Clark Kent’s time as a young reporter in the fictional city of Metropolis along with first encounters with key characters like Lois Lane.

Gunn says he’s already been working on the script for a while, and a director has not yet been set. One potential is Ben Affleck, who Gunn says sat down with the pair to discuss directing an upcoming DC feature specifically.

The new Gunn-penned Superman project will not replace the previously announced JJ Abrams-Ta-Nehisi Coates “Superman” concept, which remains in active development.
