2023 Oscars VFX Nominee Shortlist Revealed

Marvel

From today, voting opens in eight categories of the Academy Awards as members of the specific branches whittle down numerous entries in each category to a final list of five.

Variety reports they have obtained a list all twenty films on the shortlist for the Best Visual Effects Oscar. The Visual Effects branch of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences will narrow the list further to ten from a ‘bakeoff’ stage that began today. From there, the final five nominees will be chosen.

The list includes all three Marvel films this year, DC’s “The Batman,” James Cameron’s “Avatar” sequel and bit studio films like “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Jurassic World: Dominion”.

Others are more interesting or unexpected inclusions, including “Gigi & Nate,” “Bardo,” “Good Night Oppy,” “RRR,” and recent war dramas “Devotion” and “All Quiet on the Western Front”.

Naturally, some of the rather questionable visual effects shots from this year have cropped up in response to this list, such as the infamous floating head scene from the recent “Thor” which was so bad it had to be fixed ahead of the film’s streaming debut (fixed version can be seen above). The list of twenty is as follows:

“All Quiet on the Western Front” (Netflix)
“Avatar: The Way of Water” (20th Century Studios)
“Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths” (Netflix)
“The Batman” (Warner Bros.)
“Black Adam” (Warner Bros.)
“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (Marvel Studios)
“Devotion” (Sony Pictures)
“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” (Marvel Studios)
“Elvis” (Warner Bros.)
“Everything Everywhere All at Once” (A24)
“Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” (Warner Bros.)
“Gigi & Nate” (Roadside Attractions)
“Good Night Oppy” (Amazon Studios)
“The Gray Man” (Netflix)
“Jurassic World: Dominion” (Universal Pictures)
“Nope” (Universal Pictures)
“RRR” (Variance Films)
“Thirteen Lives” (Amazon Studios/MGM)
“Thor: Love and Thunder” (Marvel Studios)
“Top Gun: Maverick” (Paramount Pictures)

As the trade advises, this is not an official list released by the Academy and could change. The final five nominees in this category will be announced on January 24th with the rest of the Oscar nominations.
