“White Lotus” Plans Likely Asia-Set S3

HBO

Mike White’s “The White Lotus” wrapped up its seven-episode second season run on HBO and not only generated a whole bunch of water cooler talk, but it also pulled in big numbers as well.

The show’s second season finale drew record high overnight viewership of 4.1 million U.S. viewers Sunday – up 46% from last week’s episode. It also more than doubled the first season finale which closed with 1.9 million multiplatform viewers in August last year.

Second season episodes are now averaging 10.1 million viewers across platforms, nearly 50% ahead of the first season at the same point.

Of course, the question now turns to what’s next. The series already scored a third season renewal last month and will again follow a new group of guests at a different White Lotus resort.

Speaking with Variety, Mike White confirms the new run could take place in Asia and will shift focus yet again:

“The first season kind of highlighted money, and then the second season is sex. I think the third season would be maybe a satirical and funny look at death and Eastern religion and spirituality. It feels like it could be a rich tapestry to do another round at White Lotus.”

Indeed, Meghann Fahy’s Daphne in the series hinted at a potential location next year when she suggests the Maldives off the coast of Sri Lanka.
