Some actors find comic book films beneath them, whilst others seem to struggle to balance between those larger tentpole films and the smaller indie artistic fare they want to do.
For Oscar winner Olivia Colman however, there’s no issue. Famed for her roles across prestige pictures and television, Colman makes her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in the “Secret Invasion” series.
Speaking with USA Today to promote Sam Mendes’ new film “Empire of Light,” the always delightfully honest actress discussed her feelings about jumping from smaller productions to a big budget Marvel series:
“I feel slightly unfaithful to the smaller films, but I am a Marvel fan. After every Marvel film (was released), I’d go to my agent, like, ‘Can I be a superhero?’ So eventually, I got to do a tiny bit in a Marvel (show) and I was thrilled. I got to meet Samuel L. Jackson – the other Sam that I love – and Don Cheadle.”
She was also asked about the ongoing controversy surrounding acclaimed directors criticizing Marvel movies to which she says: “I know that there’s a fight for spaces in cinema, and I understand all that. But I had a ball doing it.”
Colman will play Special Agent Sonya Falsworth in the series, a character hinted to be related to Howling Commandos member James Montgomery Falsworth (J.J. Feild) from “Captain America: The First Avenger”.
Asked if she could offer any details on her character, she said: “I can’t give you spoilers because I can’t remember!”.
Kyle Bradstreet created the six-episode series, which stars Jackson, Cheadle, and Colman along with Ben Mendelsohn, Cobie Smulders, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Emilia Clarke, and Martin Freeman.
