Sony Pictures Television has picked up the rights best-selling book series “The Destroyer” which features pulp action hero Remo Williams.
“Better Call Saul” alum Gordon Smith will write and executive produce the series about government operative Williams, a former cop who is framed for a crime he didn’t commit and then sentenced to death.
His death is faked by the government just so he can be trained in an obscure martial art and made an agent of an organization called CURE. Over 150 books featuring Williams have been published since the first in 1971.
The plan is to use the plentiful source material to create a “cohesive and iconic international action/adventure universe” along with retaining the signature sense of humor of the character.
Adrian Askarieh will executive produce the new series, which follows in the wake of the 1985 film “Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins” starring Fred Ward, and two other failed screen adaptations, including one by filmmaker Shane Black at Sony.
