James Gray To Helm Young JFK Biopic

20th Century Studios

“Ad Astra” and “The Lost City of Z” director James Gray has been set to direct an untitled John F. Kennedy biopic for MadRiver Pictures.

The project will focus on JFK’s evolution from an unremarkable young man desperate to prove himself to a powerful father, into a WWII hero whose adversity-hardened leadership skills forged his path to the White House.

Kennedy was the commander of a patrol torpedo boat that was inadvertently rammed by a Japanese destroyer in 1943. Over the next week or so Kennedy helped keep the boat’s men alive on nearby islands and qualified for a Purple Heart medal for his actions.

Gray will rewrite a script first penned by Samuel Franco & Evan Kilgore with filming to get underway next year. The news comes the day that Gray’s “Armageddon Time” opens in U.S. cinemas.

Marc Butan and Anthony Katagas produce.
