“The Crown” Won’t Show Diana’s Death

Netflix

Netflix has opted out of showing Princess Diana’s fatal 1997 Paris car crash in its high-profile series “The Crown”.

Production on the show’s sixth and final season is currently underway, with the crash and its aftermath expected to be a part of that season’s earliest episodes.

Netflix confirmed to The Sun that “the exact moment of the crash impact will not be shown” after reports emerged the crew had been pushing back against filming such a scene. Whilst the crash itself won’t be filmed, the series will focus on the moments leading up to the crash and the tragedy’s aftermath.

Stephen Frears had a similar problem with the 2006 film “The Queen” with his version (viewable on Youtube) blending a recreation of the paparazzi chasing Diana’s car, newsreel footage of Diana in personal moments, and a mix of increasingly tense music, clever editing and camera movement to convey the moments right up to the accident without actually showing it.

In the show’s case, a source tells the paper the series will show the car leaving The Ritz after midnight with paparazzi in pursuit, and then cut to the British Ambassador to France swinging into action with the Foreign Office and the subsequent constitutional aftermath.

The new seasons see Elizabeth Debicki play the late Princess Diana whilst Khalid Abdalla will play her late partner Dodi Al-Fayed.

The series will also show Prince Charles (Dominic West) arriving in Paris to collect Diana’s body while Mohamed Al-Fayed (Salim Daw) endures ‘casual racism’ from French authorities when taking possession of his son’s casket.

The news comes as the show’s fifth season is slated to premiere on November 9th, with the official poster unveiled today ahead of a trailer release on Thursday.
