Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment are reportedly currently meeting with directors to take the helm of “Twisters,” a big-scale sequel to Jan de Bont’s iconic 1996 storm-chaser blockbuster “Twister”.
“The Revenant” scribe Mark L. Smith penned the script which Amblin’s Steven Spielberg was reportedly so happy about that it got the film fast tracked.
“Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski was originally slated to direct back in 2020 but has since dropped out due to his commitment to Apple Studios’ Formula One racing movie feature starring Brad Pitt.
As a result, a search is underway for a new helmer with current candidates including “Prey” helmer Dan Trachtenberg, “Free Solo” co-directors Jimmy Chin & Elizabeth Chai Vaserhelyi, and LAIKA chief and “Bumblebee” director Travis Knight among others in the mix.
The project reportedly aims to bring Helen Hunt back with the lead character being the daughter she had with the late Bill Paxton’s character, a young woman who has caught the storm chasing bug her parents had.
Universal and Warner Bros. Pictures are co-financing the project with Universal taking the creative lead and Frank Marshall producing. The original “Twister” grossed more than $494 million worldwide
