“The Joy Luck Club” Gets A Sequel

Buena Vista Pictures

A sequel to the iconic 1990s feature “The Joy Luck Club” is in the works at Hyde Park Entertainment Group.

Author Amy Tan and Oscar-winning screenwriter Ron Bass are penning the new take which continues the story of Tan’s bestselling novel. Jeff Kleeman will produce.

The original film changed Asian and Asian American representation in cinema, and much of its leading cast are reportedly in talks to return to their roles.

Ming-Na Wen, Tamlyn Tomita, Rosalind Chao and Lisa Lu starred in the 1993 original which was a multigenerational saga of Chinese and Chinese-American mothers and daughters whose histories, stories and lives interweave as they navigate life.

In the sequel, the mothers become grandmothers, and the daughters become mothers in their own right, introducing a new generation exploring their own relationships with culture, heritage, love, womanhood and identity.
