With the launch of Paramount+ has come no shortage of “Star Trek” shows. ‘Discovery’ has a fifth season on the way, ‘Picard’ has a third, ‘Lower Decks’ is airing its third, ‘Prodigy’ has more episodes coming, and the recently launched ‘Strange New Worlds’ is filming its second season.
That said, those involved in the shows aren’t taking their jobs for granted it seems. “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” showrunner Henry Alonso Meyers recently spoke with TrekMovie and revealed that as the show is more episodic than other Treks, he’s not really planning beyond the current season.
The freedom of not having to deal with season-long story arcs means the series can explore the various ideas the writers and producers want to do, and they’re grabbing hard on that prospect says Meyers whilst discussing his approach to the second season:
“I want to [do] more of what’s worked. But I would also say, in some ways, it’s different. We were trying to take what worked and really amplify that. And then try to correct where we weren’t happy with it.
But the biggest thing we tried to do was not hold back stuff. We were really like, ‘Okay, let’s pretend this is our last season. And let’s absolutely go for everything that we wanted to do.’
I would say we tried to do comedy, and we were like, ‘Let’s go for bigger comedy. Let’s make things bigger and crazier.’ We tried to do drama, so we wanted to really kind of go to the gut of stuff and make episodes that were going to make you cry.”
The series does have to wrap up some lingering plot threads, such as the first season’s cliffhanger ending with its arrest of a key character, and there’s the eventual grim fate of Captain Pike (Anson Mount) to eventually come, but before that we’ll hopefully get a lot more fun.
The second season of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” is expected to premiere sometime in 2023.
