Following the massive critical and commercial success of “Drive,” filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn’s works have been increasingly more esoteric and, as such, decreasingly seen.
2013’s “Only God Forgives” led to 2016’s “The Neon Demon” which led to his Amazon series “Too Old to Die Young” which was essentially dumped by Amazon onto its service back in 2019 with no fanfare, despite good reviews.
That hasn’t stopped him from moving forward though, with Refn heading right back to work with “Copenhagen Cowboy” – a Netflix series that sees him return to his early crime roots akin to his “Pusher” trilogy.
The six-episode neon-drenched noir series follows Miu, a young heroine who traverses the ominous landscape of Copenhagen’s criminal netherworld, searching for justice and enacting vengeance.
Along the way, she encounters her nemesis, Rakel, as they embark on an odyssey through the natural and the supernatural. The past ultimately transforms and defines their future, as the two women discover they are not alone, they are many.
Angela Bundalovic, Lola Corfixen, Zlatko Buric, Andreas Lykke Jørgensen, Jason Hendil-Forssell, Li Ii Zhang, and Dragana Milutinovic co-star.
Parts of the six-episode series are set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival this week ahead of an expected premiere sometime later this year. Check out the teaser trailer for the series below:
