More details have emerged about Rian Johnson’s “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” as part of a series of feature articles in Empire.
As we know, Daniel Craig returns as detective Benoit Blanc in the film and says he had to retrain with a dialect coach to get back Blanc’s southern accent from the prior film.
Now, the sequel follows a group of old acquaintances summoned to Greece by a rich friend for a murder-mystery game that gets a little too real. Names and breakdowns of each character joining Craig’s Blanc are as follows:
Edward Norton is Miles Bron, a billionaire tech disruptor.
Leslie Odom Jr. is Lionel Toussaint, a scientist in Bron’s employ.
Janelle Monáe is Cassandra ‘Andi’ Brand, a rival tech entrepreneur.
Dave Bautista is Duke Cody, a famed YouTube star.
Madelyn Cline is Whiskey, the younger girlfriend and channel assistant to Duke.
Kathryn Hahn is Claire Debella, a Connecticut governor running for Senate.
Kate Hudson is Birdie Jay, a famed fashionista.
Jessica Henwick is Birdie’s assistant Peg.
Details of Ethan Hawke’s character are under wraps.
In terms of thematics, director Rian Johnson says there’s once again an undercurrent of social commentary here which deals with income inequality:
“The movie itself is not entirely about the income divide, but that definitely has a huge place in it. We’re in a moment in history where the divide feels increasingly obscene. Like a circus that we can’t keep our eyes off even as the negative effects of it become more and more real in all our lives.”
“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” is scheduled to have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10th, it will close the BFI London Film Festival on October 16th, and will be released on Netflix on December 23rd.
