In an abrupt and unexpected exit, actor Jordan Elsass will not be returning for the third season of “Superman & Lois” in the role of eldest son Jonathan Kent.

In a statement released on Tuesday evening, Warner Bros. Television says: “Jordan Elsass has notified the studio that he will not be returning to ‘Superman & Lois’ for Season 3 due to personal reasons. The role of Jonathan Kent will be recast.”

No specifics regarding Elsass’ departure from the series were given. Sources for Variety indicate it was not a result of a workplace-related issue, whilst Deadline indicates Elsass “has been dealing with serious personal issues, some of them possibly related to mental health”.

Elsass has starred in the series since its inception as the eldest son of Clark Kent (Tyler Hoechlin) and Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch) and brother to this superpowered sibling Jordan (Alexander Garfin).

The character isn’t going anywhere as showrunner Todd Helbing previously indicated the production team want to bring Jonathan into the superhero life more than he has been in past seasons.

The exit comes six weeks after the series aired its second season finale and ahead of a third season kicking off production in Vancouver shortly.
