One of the few film success stories of the Warner Bros. and HBO Max day-and-date experiment was their “Mortal Kombat” reboot. The 2021 film proved a streaming hit and even managed to make $83 million at the box-office right in the midst of the pandemic.

A sequel was ordered with “Moon Knight” and “The Umbrella Academy” creator Jeremy Slater taking over from Greg Russo and Dave Callaham on the script.

The film is still in the development stage but Slater recently spoke to Discussing Film about writing the follow-up and expressed his enthusiasm for the project and how they’ve taken in the feedback from the last film to make adjustments in this:

“The Mortal Kombat sequel is awesome. I’m having a ton of fun. I can’t really share any details about it, but we want to make something that the fans really love and I think it’s a really great creative team.

They have been listening to the fan reactions and they know what fans loved about the first movie and what they didn’t. Everyone is creatively setting out to really make a sequel that tops the original in every way. We’re still very early in the process, but the fans should be really excited. It’s going to be awesome.”

The first film teased several potential plot threads from the potential inclusion of Johnny Cage to Sub-Zero potentially transforming into Noob Saibot. The “Mortal Kombat” sequel has no potential release date at this point.
