The Disney+ prequel series “Obi-Wan Kenobi” wrapped its six-episode run this week and in the process its finale offered a cameo that many hoped would come.

SPOILERS AHEAD FOR “OBI-WAN KENOBI” FINALE

After effectively wrapping up the story threads, the very closing moments of the series saw Liam Neeson reprising his Qui-Gon Jinn role from “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace” – twenty-three years after he first played it.

The actor appeared as a Force Ghost that Kenobi was finally able to see and communicate with after overcoming his personal demons related to his failure to save Anakin Skywalker. Neeson spoke with THR and discussed why he wanted to return:

“I certainly didn’t want anyone else playing Qui-Gon Jinn, and I wanted to show my respect for George [Lucas] and that mythical world that he created. Plus, Ewan [McGregor] is a pal, and I loved working with him during The Phantom Menace 25 years ago.”

In recent years Neeson has spoken about he was always a fan of ‘The Phantom Menace’ and is happy with how a new generation of fans have come to appreciate the prequels in the years since.

The episode also featured another notable cameo with actor Ian McDiarmid reprising his role as The Emperor for a holographic conversation, though rumors that Cameron Monaghan might pop up as his “Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order” character Cal Kestis sadly didn’t pan out. Rumblings have now started online that his character may end up getting his own show.

The full “Obi-Wan Kenobi” series is streaming now on the Disney+ service.
