With the Star Wars Celebration convention taking place over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, there’s been a ton of news from the panels about new and returning shows from the franchise that are on the way.
Amongst those attending has been Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy who has offered an update on one key project whilst speaking withTotal Film.
Kennedy was asked to clarify her comments in a Vanity Fair feature piece the other month. In that piece, she implied Lucasfilm had learned a lesson from the box-office failure of “Solo” to no longer recast legacy characters with younger actors.
This weekend she told the outlet whilst the possibility of recasting is always there, they’re not seeking it out or doing anything like that right now. One notable exception though? The previously announced “Lando” series:
“I never say never [about recasting]. It’s certainly not something that we’re doing with any intention right now. We’re still talking about Lando with Donald Glover, for instance, but I don’t think we would intentionally just look back at some of the characters like Luke and Leia and whatnot and decide arbitrarily to do a story. There would have to be a really strong reason why.”
Meanwhile “The Mandalorian” showrunner Jon Favreau spoke with Collider about the future of that first of the “Star Wars” TV series. Asked if the production team has an endgame in sight for that series, Favreau said:
“I think Dave [Filoni] and I talked about this a lot. And, it’s interesting how things evolve and change in small ways, but we all know where everything’s going to end because of when the time period ends.
We know that the First Order is going to appear. So, there are things on the horizon that we know, but that’s 25 years in the future. Within that, we also know storylines that are going to unfold within the characters that we’re either inheriting or developing.
So, I would say that there is a lot of preparation done in broad strokes with how do these storylines that we’ve established culminate, but we’re doing that within the confines and parameters of what’s pre-existing in canon.”
The new season of “The Mandalorian” will see Katee Sackhoff’s Bo-Katan Kyrze upgraded to a major role and Rick Famuyiwa promoted to executive producer. It is scheduled to premiere in February 2023.
One big happy Mando family!
