Castle Rock Entertainment has announced “It’s Spinal Tap II,” a sequel to Rob Reiner’s fabled 1984 rock mockumentary.
Reiner will return to both direct the sequel and play the role of filmmaker Marty DiBergi. Also back are the three key characters that make up England’s sauciest heavy metal band – David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer), and Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest).
Tony Hendra, who played the band’s manager Ian Faith, has passed away and that will be worked into the storyline. In the new film, Ian’s widow inherits a contract that says Spinal Tap owed them one more concert and she will sue them if they don’t do it.
As a result the band, which hasn’t spent any time together recently, are thrown back together and forced to deal with each other and play this concert. Guest, McKean, Reiner, and Shearer all conceived the new film while Frank Marshall will produce.
The original was released to critical acclaim in 1984 and is one of the few selected for preservation by the National Film Registry. It will screen on the beach as part of the Cannes Film Festival this year.
The sequel marks the first feature of Castle Rock’s newly relaunched film division. It is targeting a March 10th 2024 release.
