Iconic British TV actor Dennis Waterman, best known for his roles in the likes of “Minder,” “The Sweeney” and “New Tricks” has died at the age of 74.

In a statement from his family, they say: “We are deeply saddened to announce that our beloved Dennis passed away very peacefully at his home in Spain. The family kindly ask that our privacy is respected at this very difficult time.”

Waterman reportedly died on Sunday afternoon with his fourth wife Pam at his side. He has been one of the best-known faces on British television since the 1970s. First he starred opposite John Thaw in the influential cop drama “The Sweeney” which inspired many that came after – most notably “Life on Mars”.

Then he spent eleven years starring as bodyguard Terry McCann opposite George Cole’s huckster Arthur Daley in “Minder” for which he also sang the show’s famed theme song.

He had roles in several comedies before taking up a twelve-year stint as a detective in “New Tricks”.
