Whilst there’s been talk, yet again, of Warners changing up its DC strategy now that a new executive regime is in place, there are still quite a few films the company has on its slate that have already been in production.
One such project is HBO Max’s “Batgirl” feature starring Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon whilst J.K. Simmons returns as Commissioner Jim Gordon, Brendan Fraser plays the villain and Michael Keaton is back as Bruce Wayne.
The project was filmed in Glasgow and wrapped its four-month shoot about a fortnight ago under the direction of “Bad Boys for Life” duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. From all accounts, filming went smoothly and Grace tells Variety that there’s already been some early discussion about a potential sequel:
“We got to see this first one first. But there’s definitely some talks about what it [a sequel] could be. I’ve seen some of what we’ve shot, obviously in the playback and stuff like that, and it’s insane. We’ve already been talking about where do we take this from here because there’s so much that happens in this film.
There are a lot of different themes in the plot that we touch on. It’s not just the action. There’s a love story. There’s this father-daughter relationship. There’s looking at the world through a lens that isn’t just black and white and seeing the color and the spectrum between things.”
How Warner Bros. Discovery’s new strategy might impact the sequel’s chances is unclear. For now, the film is still opting to skip a theatrical run and go direct-to-HBO Max sometime either towards year’s end or in 2023.
