“Don’t Breathe” and “Evil Dead” director Fede Alvarez has been set to write and direct a new and original stand-alone “Alien” feature for 20th Century Studios.

Ridley Scott will produce the title which is unconnected to the previous films and is being made with the intention to directly premiere on Hulu.

Reportedly Alvarez pitched his take to Scott years ago and then late last year Scott asked if he was still up for it with Alvarez jumping onboard.

20th Century Studios president Steve Asbell revealed this week the plan is to release at least ten movies a year on the Disney-operated streaming service with only two or three theatrical releases planned.

This method allows for more edgy storytelling experimentation, and this “Alien” project is following in the footsteps of Dan Trachtenberg’s “Prey,” an original stand-alone film in the “Predator” franchise which will premiere on Hulu later this year.

Asbell says 20th Century picked up the new “Alien” purely off the strength of Alvarez’s pitch as it’s “really good story with a bunch of characters you haven’t seen before”.
