The currently in production third season of “Star Trek: Picard” will be the show’s last according to both star Patrick Stewart and show producer Akiva Goldsman whilst speaking with SFX Magazine (via Slashfilm).

The currently 81-year-old Stewart will reportedly retire the character at the end of the third season with Goldsman and Stewart indicating the show was never meant to run indefinitely and three seasons was always the plan.

This marks the first of the nu-Trek era shows to have set an ending. “Star Trek: Discovery” was recently renewed for a fifth season, animated comedy “Star Trek: Lower Decks” will return for a third, the yet to premiere “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” already has a second season order, and the kids series “Star Trek: Prodigy” is still in the midst of airing its first run.

“Picard” debuted back in January 2020 to much fanfare, but by the end of its run the reaction was much more mixed with some elements such as cast members like Stewart, Santiago Cabrera, Michelle Hurd and Jeri Ryan praised, but the overall whole criticised for its writing, tone and some characterisations.

Paramount went ahead and ordered a second and third season with both being shot essentially back to back. The second season filming ran from February to September last year with the third season being shot starting in September and currently still ongoing.

The second season, which sees the return of Whoopi Goldberg as Guinan and John de Lancie as Q, airs from March 3rd to May 5th on Paramount+ in the U.S. and on Amazon Prime throughout much of the rest of the world.

No date for a third season premiere has been announced though it will likely be in early 2023.
