Universal Pictures has acquired “Hidalgo” scribe John Fusco’s spec script “Phantom” with John Legend, Harvey Mason Jr and Mike Jackson producing.

The film is a new adaptation of Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel “Phantom of the Opera,” this time set in contemporary New Orleans and the sultry nightlife scene of The French Quarter.

It’s here a “H.E.R.-like neo-Soul singer ingenue” is mentored by a mysterious man while strange mishaps occur in a famed club trying to remain vibrant.

The novel is in the public domain and has been adapted many times, most famously into the long-running Andrew Lloyd Weber musical.
