Broccoli On Bond Casting, Fukunaga Return

Broccoli On Bond Casting Fukunaga Return
EON & Universal Pictures

With “No Time to Die” in the rearview mirror, James Bond franchise producer Barbara Broccoli has spoken a little more about what’s next for 007 in the wake of Daniel Craig’s departure.

Whilst speculation has been high about who will play the part next, Broccoli has shot down the possibility of a gender-swapped Bond. She tells THR:

“I think it will be a man because I don’t think a woman should play James Bond. I believe in making characters for women and not just having women play men’s roles

I don’t think there are enough great roles for women, and it’s very important to me that we make movies for women about women.”

In addition, she says nationality is important but ethnicity is not: “He should be British, so British can be any [ethnicity or race].” Broccoli also says she would love to work with “No Time to Die” director Cary Fukunaga again:

“We love Cary. He’s done an exceptional job. I don’t have any idea whether he’d do another one. I think he did this because he wanted a challenge, and he sure pulled it off. But I’m not sure if he’d do another one. We’d love to work with him again.”

Broccoli is also steadfast in keeping the property from diluting its value with unnecessary TV series or spinoffs:

“Sure, there are other main characters like M and Q and all that, but we haven’t really wanted to make a Bond film without Bond. It would be like making Hamlet without Hamlet.”

For now, she has little interest in discussing the next Bond, saying she’s not going to think about it until she absolutely has to.
