Apple Original Films has come onboard “Bad Blood,” the film which sees “The Big Short” and “Don’t Look Up” director Adam McKay re-teaming with Jennifer Lawrence in a story about the rise and fall of the founder of infamous med-tech company Theranos.
Based on Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist John Carreyrou’s book, Lawrence would play biotech entrepreneur Elizabeth Holmes. Holmes founded the startup which claimed to have devised blood tests requiring only very small amounts of blood and could be performed rapidly using small automated devices.
Overnight, she became a self-made multi-billionaire and then lost those billions following allegations the company’s blood tests were inaccurate. Subsequent reports showed that the company’s tests were faulty and Holmes was banned from operating labs. She was charged with fraud by the SEC in 2018 and recently has been on trial for wire fraud and conspiracy charges.
Lawrence will star and produce along with McKay, who will also write and direct the film. Apple Studios will produce in association with Legendary Pictures which first picked up the project in 2016. Kevin Messick, Justine Polsky and Will Ferrell will also produce.
