Villeneuve On Feyd & “Dune” Returnees

Villeneuve On Feyd Dune Returnees
Warner Bros. Pictures

With “Dune: Part Two” having gotten the green light and ready to shoot next year for a late 2023 release, filmmaker Denis Villeneuve is still out there talking up “Dune: Part One” and how things will change with the next one.

As we know that second film will adapt the back half of Herbert’s novel and, due to the nature of the story, several characters from the first aren’t expected to show up in the second.

Speaking with Empire, Villeneuve was asked if some of those characters could make a return in the next film to which Villeneuve says:

“Well, that is a major spoiler! As Timothée [Chalamet] kept saying, the book has been out there for 60 years, it’s a very well known story – but yes, some will reappear out of the dust.

Part Two will be such a cinematic treat. Making Part One for me was just to [set] the table, you know? And to explain the cultures and the background of all the different planets and civilizations. And then to have that chance, now that everything is set, Part Two will be just an amazing playground. It will be so fun to do.”

Then of course there are the characters missing from the first film that have been held back for the second – most notably Baron Harkonnen’s other nephew Feyd-Rautha. Villeneuve is quite happy to talk about him and how his non-inclusion in ‘Part One’ was a very deliberate choice:

“Definitely. That’s a choice that I personally brought on. There was enough characters that were introduced in this first part, and it will be more elegant to keep Feyd for Part Two. It will be definitely a very, very important character in the second part.”

“Dune” is now showing in cinemas and has just ended its run on HBO Max for now.
