Those holding out hope for a more powerful Nintendo Switch follow-up console are going to have a long wait.
With the Nintendo Switch continuing strong sales and with both the Switch Lite and OLED models recently introduced, the Japanese company has made it clear the Switch’s eventual successor won’t be arriving anytime soon.
During a management briefing held by Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa, and transcribed by analyst David Gibson (via Metro), the next console was briefly acknowledged but with a release window of 20XX – suggesting it will be out at least some time in the 21st century.
Asked specifically about the new console’s status, it was made clear the machine is still in the early discussion phase and they are still planning out the concept and potential timing of it. This means it’s still a long way from the hardware manufacturing level let alone a release.
In addition, it was indicated that Nintendo sees the Switch as currently being in the ‘middle phase’ of its cycle. Launch in 2017, this suggests not to expect Nintendo’s next console until at least 2024/2025 as opposed to the late 2022/early 2023 rumors that have been suggested online.
