Colman Domingo (“Candyman”), Audra McDonald (“The Good Fight”), Glynn Turman (“A Different World”) and Chris Rock will star in “Rustin,” a biopic of influential civil rights and gay rights activist Bayard Rustin at Netflix.

Michelle and Barack Obama are producing through their Higher Ground label. George C. Wolfe (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”) directs from a script he co-wrote with Dustin Lance Black (“Milk”). Bruce Cohen and Tonia Davis also produce.

Rustin was a key figure in the early civil rights movement in the mid-20th century, leading or helping organise several marches on Washington including Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous 1963 march.

He was also arrested for his sexual orientation, something he tried to keep secret since many believed it would undermine the civil rights work Rustin and others were trying to accomplish.

Domingo will portray Rusin alongside Rock as onetime NAACP leader Roy Wilkins, Turman, as activist A. Philip Randolph, and McDonald as Ella Baker.
