Netflix has confirmed it will be adding video games as a free add-on to its existing member subscriptions.
As part of a shareholder letter released ahead of its Tuesday earnings call, the company confirmed the recent speculation that they are getting into gaming though advise they are still in the “early stages” of such an expansion.
One thing that is set though is that there won’t be a separate price tier for games, they will come included with existing subscriptions.
They also spelled out said games will be primarily made for mobile devices, so don’t expect the next “Mass Effect” or “Ghost of Tsushima” major AAA title – think more the next “Among Us”:
“We view gaming as another new content category for us, similar to our expansion into original films, animation and unscripted TV. We’re excited as ever about our movies and TV series offering, and we expect a long runway of increasing investment and growth across all of our existing content categories, but since we are nearly a decade into our push into original programming, we think the time is right to learn more about how our members value games.”
The company in the past has said they compete more with a game like “Fortnite” than they do a movie/TV rival like HBO in terms of user attention. Gaming would offer them a new (and potentially lucrative) revenue stream at a reasonable investment cost along with being able to use their existing infrastructure.
