As part of a presentation at Cannes today, French production and distribution outfit Studiocanal announced or confirmed a slew of projects either in development or in early stages of production – including some sequels to their more successful efforts of recent years.
Liam Neeson, who has had big success with them thanks to his various collaborations with Jaume Collett-Sera on the likes of “Unknown,” “Non-Stop” and “The Commuter,” has set two more projects with them.
One is the action thriller “Retribution” which is currently shooting in Berlin under the direction of Nimrod Antal. Matthew Modine, Embeth Davidtz and Noma Dumezweni co-star in that film.
The other is a sequel to the dark comedy “Cold Pursuit” with director Hans Petter Moland, writer Frank Baldwin and producer Michael Shamberg all returning.
Next, Studiocanal and The Picture Company re-teaming on a sequel to “Gunpowder Milkshake,” the all-star female assassin film which is slated to premiere next week on Netflix in the U.S. and via a global theatrical rollout later this summer.
Kaley Cuoco is attached to both star in and produce the Seth Owen-penned “Role Play” which is currently in development and follows a couple whose relationship is thrust into upheaval when secrets from both of their pasts are unearthed.
“Jurassic World” director Colin Trevorrow’s period adaptation of David Fisher’s novel “War Magician,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch, will begin shooting next year. Nicholas Mariani is adapting the script.
“The Witcher” actress Freya Allen will star in the horror-thriller “Baghead” which is set to shoot in Berlin and helmed by Alberto Corredor based on his 2017 short of the same name.
A sequel to the upcoming film adaptation of Matt Haig’s “A Boy Called Christmas” is on the way with Gil Kenan returning to write and direct the follow-up. The first hits cinemas this fall.
These join other projects on the way including the previously announced “Attack the Block” sequel with John Boyega returning, the currently shooting new “Evil Dead” film, the Jake Gyllenhaal and Vanessa Kirby survival drama “Suddenly,” the Tom Hanks produced film adaptation of Erik Larson’s best-seller “In the Garden of Beasts,” and multiple “Pippi Longstocking” movies in the works from Heyday Films.
