WarnerMedia has reportedly fixed major bugs with the HBO Max app for Apple TVs that had left the service a malfunctioning mess for several days.
Among the errors were video controls not working properly, some users not being allowed playback, issues displaying subtitles, rendering Siri commands useless, forcing SDR videos into HDR without tone map adjustments, and malfunctioning pop-up windows.
The problems began with a June 2nd release that introduced a proprietary video player developed by WarnerMedia. The aim was to provide a version of the service that would offer a “smoother streaming experience” and focus on fixing bugs.
Instead it caused enough widespread problems that the app has had to go back to using Apple’s own native video player. Andy Forssell, general manager of HBO Max, said on Twitter: “No excuses from us. Good intentions, bad execution. We’ll learn from it.”
In a message late Tuesday night, HBO Max’s customer help account wrote: “We just released an update to our Apple TV app, restoring the native tvOS video playback experience you know and love, with more improvements to come. Ensuring HBO Max viewers have a quality experience is our top priority and we missed the mark here. Thank you for your patience.”
