Netflix has announced the start of production on eight-episode period drama “1899” which hails from “Dark” creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar and their Dark Ways company.
Dubbed a “truly European series,” the action unfolds on an immigrant ship crossing the Atlantic in the 19th century.
The crew embark on a hopeful voyage of rebirth in a new land. Things quickly become nightmarish however when they come across an adrift ship that has been missing for months.
The actors in the ensemble cast, assembled from across Europe, will each speak their native languages. Announced cast includes Emily Beecham, Aneurin Barnard, Andreas Pietschmann, Miguel Bernardeau, Maciej Musial, Anton Lesser, Rosalie Craig. Clara Rosager amd Maria Erwolter.
A newly built “Mandalorian”-style virtual production stage, with the largest LED ‘Volume’ stage of its kind in Europe, is being used for filming which is underway at Babelsberg Studios in Berlin.
