UCLA’s latest annual Hollywood Diversity Report was released yesterday and revealed that increasingly diverse audiences in the U.S. are driving an increased urgency for more diverse film content.
The study indicates people of color account for over 40% of the U.S. population and are increasingly driving attendance at the multiplex along with high viewership on SVOD services.
People of color accounted for the majority of opening weekend, domestic box office for six of the top ten films last year, while households of color ‘punched above their weight’ for viewership of eight of the top ten films released on streaming platforms.
The few big theatrical releases last year had diverse casts – “Bad Boys for Life” had over half of its cast comprising minority actors, while “Tenet” and “Sonic the Hedgehog” each had 31-40% of people of color in their cast.
