Seth MacFarlane will reboot the seminal 1980s comedy series “Revenge of the Nerds” with a new feature in the works at 20th Century Studios.
Twin brothers Keith and Kenny Lucas (“22 Jump Street,” “Judas and the Black Messiah”) are set to write and star in the film, the pair co-writing with Alex Rubens (“Key and Peele,” “Rick and Morty”). MacFarlane and Erica Huggins will produce.
The new version will avoid some of the problematic issues of the original, including an infamous rape scene played for laughs which director Jeff Kanew and writer Steve Zacharias have since both spoken publicly about their regret over its inclusion.
Instead, the contemporary-set reimagining will look into today’s nerd culture and asks what even constitutes a geek in the 21st century. A previous attempt to remake the property in 2006 with a film starring Adam Brody, Dan Byrd and Kristin Cavallari was scrapped two weeks into production.
