Jake Gyllenhall and his Nine Stories production company have set a first-look film deal with New Republic Pictures. Nine Stories is backing Netflix’s “The Devil All the Time” launching next month, “Good Joe Bell” launching in Toronto in a few weeks, and are developing the film adaptation of Ubisoft’s video game “The Division” also for Netflix. Brett Haley (“Hearts Beat Loud”) has been set to direct a film adaptation of the podcast “36 Questions” at Netflix, Chernin Entertainment and Automatik. Haley and Marc Basch are penning the script while Fred Berger and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones will produce. Plot specifics are under wraps beyond it being a romantic drama set in the music world. Seen & Heard
“Insecure” star Issae Rae will executive produce “Seen & Heard,” a two-part documentary for HBO exploring the history of black television. Currently in production, it will look at the issue through the eyes of those who wrote, produced, created and starred in groundbreaking series of the past and present. Phil Bertelsen directs. Distant
Naomi Scott (“Aladdin”) and Anthony Ramos (“In the Heights”) are set to co-star in the comedic sci-fi film “Distant” for Amblin Partners. Scott replaces Rachel Brosnahan who had to depart due to scheduling conflicts with “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The story follows an asteroid miner who, after crash-landing on an alien planet, must contend with the challenges of his new surroundings, while making his way across the harsh terrain to the only other survivor – a woman who is trapped in her escape pod. The One and Only Ivan
Walt Disney Studios has released a new featurette for the live-action/CG hybrid feature based on Katherine Applegate’s award-winning novel “The One and Only Ivan” which is scheduled to debut exclusively on Disney+ on Friday August 21st.

The film boasts the voices of Sam Rockwell, Angelina Jolie, Helen Mirren, Danny DeVito, Brooklynn Prince, Chaka Khan, Ron Funches, Mike White and Phillipa Soo. Bryan Cranston and Ramon Rodriquez also star in the Thea Sharrock-directed effort.
