“Mulan” PVOD Price Is For “Continuous Access”

Yesterday came a major announcement by Disney CEO Bob Chapek that their big live-action “Mulan” feature will both hit cinemas and premiere on the Disney+ service on September 4th. The latter however would be a PVOD release and so you’ll have to pay $29.99 USD to watch it.

One thing that wasn’t clear at the time is if that price was a rental (and if so how long) or a sell through price meaning you own it. Well The Insider sought clarification from a Disney+ representative and now they have it.

The rep tells the outlet the $29.99 is not a rental charge, and Disney+ subscribers who’ve paid that one-time charge will have “continuous access to the film for as long as they remain subscribers to the service.” In other words it’s a purchase, but one you’ll lose if you cancel the Disney+ service. It’s expected the film will eventually end up available on Disney+ without an additional cost anyway, which makes this PVOD somewhat akin to early access DLC in video gaming.

Also confirmed is that the film will hit most markets where Disney+ currently is active including the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and a number of countries in Western Europe. They will have ‘premiere access’ to the film beginning September 4th.
