Discovery Announces Streaming Service Plans

Discovery has announced plans for a new direct-to-consumer streaming service, one that will focus on non-fiction and unscripted content.

During a call with investors this morning, Discovery’s CEO David Zaslav says the new service will provide an alternative to current SVOD outlets which are focused on scripted series and movies.

They may be onto something as demand for documentaries and non-scripted content has risen sharply since the COVID-19 pandemic began. The service will include a library of series devoted to natural history, animals and the environment and reportedly includes nearly $400 million worth of natural history programming from BBC Studios:

“Our [service] will be filled with large fresh content, a huge amount of original content, and it comes at a time where people, because of quarantine, have been consuming and consuming Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon and what’s on these different AVOD and SVOD services and they’ve been picking at them. So we think we’ll launch with a differentiated service, which will be useful every day, all the time and will have all the characters you love, which really differentiates us. We think it’s gonna be a terrific companion.”

No name or launch date were revealed, nor if this will be an AVOD or SVOD service, but that information is expected to be disclosed soon.
