Van Damme Is Netflix’s “The Last Mercenary”

Martial arts master Jean-Claude Van Damme is joining the Netflix fold, the actor is reportedly already at work shooting the French-language action-comedy “The Last Mercenary” for the streamer.

Van Damme plays a mysterious former secret service agent who must urgently return to France when his estranged son is falsely accused of arms and drug trafficking by the government, following a blunder by an overzealous bureaucrat and a mafia operation.

The project marks Van Damme’s first attempt at a straight up action comedy as opposed to a more serious minded action-centric affair. David Charhon (“On the Other Side of the Tracks”) helms the film which he co-wrote with Ismael Sy Savane while Alban Ivanov, Assa Sylla and Samir Decazza co-star. Van Damme says in a statement:

“‘The Last Mercenary’ is an incredibly exciting project and allows me to take on a new genre. I’ve always been a fan of Jean-Paul Belmondo and I hope to take up the torch of action comedy in my own way. David Charhon’s script brings all these elements together in a very successful way – a beautiful story with emotion, a lot of action and a lot of humor.”

Charhon, Jean-Charles Levy, Nicolas Manuel, Olivier Albou, Laurence Schonberg, Jakema Charhon, Eponine Maillet, Olias Barco and Vlad Riashyn produce.
