Irish filmmaker Lee Cronin, who helmed 2019’s acclaimed horror spooker “The Hole in the Ground,” has been set as the writer and director of the next “Evil Dead” film.
Actor Bruce Campbell, who has played the lead character of Ash Williams in the film and TV series, spoke with Empire this week who asked him about the current status of a new film in the franchise. He confirmed both Cronin’s involvement and a new title:
“We’re just getting off the phone with Lee Cronin, who is writing and directing the next ‘Evil Dead’. It’s called ‘Evil Dead Now.’ Sam [Raimi] handpicked Lee – he did a cool movie called ‘The Hole In The Ground.’ We’re going to get that sucker out as soon as practical.”
Cronin also directed an episode of Sam Raimi’s new Quibi anthology horror series “50 States of Fright” so has experience working with Raimi. Campbell confirms the new film isn’t a follow-up to the original continuity across his three films and TV series, nor does it sound like a direct sequel to Fede Alvarez’s 2013 remake. Rather it’ll be its own thing:
“From this point forward, they kind of have to stand on their own. Which is fine. And liberating. You could have different heroes, different heroines in this case. This one’s gonna be a little more dynamic. We just want to keep the series current. And the mantra, really, is that our heroes and heroines are just regular people. That’s what we’re going to continue.”
In any case, it sounds like the film is happening sooner rather than later and so could well arrive before you know it.
