“Sith,” “Phoenix,” “Squad” Alternate Cut Talk

In the wake of the announcement of “Zack Snyder’s Justice League,” talk turned toward other films with problematic theatrical cuts, ones with rumors of more substantial earlier versions.

The one we’ve heard the most about is, of course, David Ayer’s “Suicide Squad”. Ayer has already discussed it numerous times now, but recently he got an endorsement from another filmmaker of note – James Gunn (“Guardians of the Galaxy”).

Gunn is currently in post-production on “The Suicide Squad,” a part sequel and part reboot of Ayer’s problematic first “Suicide Squad,” and was asked by a fan if he would oppose the release of the ‘ Ayer Cut’. Gunn says he has no issue with it and posted (via CBM: “I’d be okay with whatever @DavidAyerMovies & Warners wanted to release with that no problem.”

Ayer responded to Gunn, saying: “James, I really appreciate that, however this crazy ride unfolds. You’re good people and no lie – I can’t wait to see your take on these characters – you’re a master filmmaker.”

Another that’s been discussed is the woeful “X-Men” film “Dark Phoenix” which was heavily retooled and released last year. However, the film’s helmer Simon Kinberg has dismissed the idea of a longer director’s cut and tells IGN what was released “was ultimately my vision for the film.” Josh Trank meanwhile says there is “no need” for a “Fantastic Four” alternate cut.

Then there’s “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith” with a fan petition on Change.org demanding Lucasfilm release a four-hour cut of the film. Such a cut has never been confirmed by anyone tied to the film, but thousands have signed a petition anyway.

Expect more speculation and discussion along this line of thinking in the future.
